Boysenberry Hybrid Thorny: Cultivate Your Own Abundant, Sweet Berries

Rejoice in the timeless delight of homegrown boysenberries with our vigorous Boysenberry Hybrid Thorny plant. A true garden treasure, this floricane variety promises an abundance of large, black, sweet fruits around July, delivering that cherished, nostalgic taste home gardeners rave about. Descended from a cross between Loganberry and Dewberry and popularized by Rudolf Boysen in the 1920s, this hybrid is a rewarding choice for those seeking high-yielding, flavorful berries and the satisfaction of nurturing a unique fruit.

Features

Feature Detail
Botanical Type Boysenberry Floricane Thorny (Rubus ursinus x idaeus) is actually a hybrid of several species of blackberry (Rubus fruticosus).
Origin Named after Rudolf Boysen, a Swedish berry breeder who lived in California in the 1920s. Thought to have descended from a cross between the Loganberry (Rubus x loganobaccus) and Dewberry (Rubus ursinus).
Fruit Characteristics Black, large, delicious, sweet fruit is very attractive and popular.
Ideal Growing Conditions Grows best in moist soil enriched with plenty of decomposed organic matter, and performs best during a long, temperate growing season.
Growth Habit & Support Thin, trailing runners that must be trained to an upright support structure or they creep along the ground and form impenetrable thickets.
Fruiting Season Bears fruits about July on 1-year-old FLORICANE canes.
Pruning Instructions After fruiting, canes need to be cut to the ground. After pruned, each plant should have eight to 12 newly sprouted canes, each cut back to 6 to 8 feet long and left to mature for next year’s crop of berries.
Hardiness Zones 4-9
Pot Size 12 cm pot.

Usage & Fit Guidance

  • Planting: Ensure your Boysenberry Hybrid Thorny is planted in moist soil rich with plenty of decomposed organic matter. It thrives in long, temperate growing seasons.
  • Support Structure: Due to its thin, trailing runners, it is critical to train the canes onto an upright support structure (such as a trellis, fence, or arbor) to prevent them from sprawling and forming dense thickets on the ground.
  • Annual Pruning: After the summer fruiting season (around July), cut the old, fruited canes all the way to the ground. Select 8-12 of the strongest newly sprouted canes, trim them back to 6-8 feet in length, and train them for the following year's berry production.

Ideal For

  • Dedicated home gardeners seeking high-quality, homegrown black fruits.
  • Individuals in USDA Hardiness Zones 4-9 looking for a compatible berry plant.
  • Those who value superior taste and size in their fresh produce, potentially recalling nostalgic flavors from childhood.
  • Gardeners who enjoy hands-on cultivation, including the specific tasks of training and annual pruning.

  • Anyone desiring abundant, high-yielding berry crops for fresh consumption, jams, and other culinary uses.

    Boysenberry

Posted by J from Missouri on 29th Jun 2022

Berry Update Holy cow! This thing is crazy with the amount of berries it's producing. The bush was absolutely red when the berries were unripe. The bush itself is vigorous and full of new canes. The berries are wonderful, just as I remembered them from childhood. Thank you!
